JJ grew up on a farm in Ohio.
An honest-to-god, cows and chickens farm with crop rotation, treehouses, creeks, ponds and turtles.
So naturally he moved to New York to pursue his dreams.
Since then he has delved into such characters as Frank N' Furter in The Rocky Horror Show, the Emcee in Cabaret, Henrik in A Little Night Music, and most notably Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch (which he has played 7 times: Boston [ART's Oberon-BroadwayWorld.com Best Actor Award,] Dayton, Fayetteville and Columbus.)
Having been described as a "top exporter of brooding characters", and "a remarkable mix of compassion, anger, confusion, beauty, love, honesty," JJ finds himself primarily playing roles that are dark and angsty, ferocious and vulnerable.
So that's his wheelhouse: a trainwreck with a heart of gold.
Contrary to the characters he plays, JJ actually enjoys life. Especially cooking. He can make a mean Boeuf Bourguignon a la Julia Child (complete with Julia Child impression.)
JJ also works with an incredible arts organization--Lovewell Institute for the Creative Arts. Lovewell empowers and guides groups of youth in their creation and production of a full length musical all in three weeks! Check them out!
